NO ADDED SALT DIET

Sodium Chloride is the chemical name for salt: it is the sodium component that is of concern.

The sodium intake of Australians varies but the average intake is estimated to be 150 200mmol per day. Most of the sodium comes from salt used at the table and added to cooking and from sodium added during processing (for example, in bread, cheese, margarine, butter, biscuits, etc). Fresh and unprocessed foods also have a small component of naturally occurring sodium.

A "no added salt" diet aims to limit sodium intake to 80 100mmol per day.
