LOW SODIUM DIET

A low sodium diet guidelines is to restrict sodium intake to 40 60mmol per day. To achieve this level of restriction the following limitations apply:

  • Avoidance of all foods as per the no added salt diet
  • No salt in cooking
  • Restrictions on overall quantities of foods
FOOD SPECIFICATION LIST
Bread and Cereals Allowed: Up to 6 slices per day low salt bread (or 3 slices per day ordinary bread), porridge, semolina, weet bix and rice
Avoid: Tinned spaghetti, cracker biscuits, plain biscuits, cornflakes, rice bubbles and muesli
Fruit Allowed: All fresh and tinned fruits and some dried fruits
Avoid: Raisins, dried figs
Vegetables Allowed: Fresh and frozen vegetables except those to avoid. All vegetables to be cooked without added salt. Mashed potato to be mashed with salt free margarine
Avoid: Tinned vegetables e.g. beetroot, asparagus. Celery, silver beet, crumbed cauliflower, tomato juice, potato salad and other salads with dressing or mayonnaise

SAMPLE MEAL PLAN FOR LOW SODIUM DIET


Breakfast Porridge or 1 weet bix

100ml milk 

1 egg

2 slices low salt toast

Salt free margarine

Jam or honey

Lunch or Dinner
Meat, fish or chicken with salt free sauce or gravy

Salt free mashed potato

Salt free vegetables

2 slices of low salt bread with salt free margarine

Or

Sandwich made from low salt bread and salt free margarine

Filling without added salt e.g. fresh chicken, roast meat

Fruit salad and cream

Between Meals: Fruit, fruit juice
