LOW POTASSIUM, DIABETIC DIET

FOOD SPECIFICATIONS
Bread and Cereals Allowed: White bread, white rolls, porridge, weetbix, cornflakes, plain biscuits (low sugar), rice
Avoid: Wholemeal bread, wholemeal rolls, wheatmeal biscuits, wafer biscuits, muesli, tinned spaghetti
Vegetables Allowed: Those vegetables not listed to avoid: the cooked vegetables are cabbage, cauliflower, cucumber, green beans, peas, Brussels sprouts, carrots, corn, celery, pumpkin, trombone, potato

Salad vegetables are cabbage (in coleslaw), gherkin, lettuce, onion, olives, tomato, asparagus

Avoid Baked beans, red kidney beans, silver beet, mushrooms and potato more than allowed 
Fruit Allowed: Fresh and tinned no added sugar fruit and fruit juice not listed to avoid: the fruit are apples, cherries, lychees, mandarin, mango, pears, pineapple, raspberries, watermelon, blackberries, grapefruit, honeydew melon, orange, papaw, plums, strawberries, tinned peaches, apple juice, orange juice and pineapple juice
Avoid: Apricots, bananas, currants, custard apples, dates, figs, grapes, kiwi fruit, loquats, nectarines, fresh peaches, pruned, rock melon, rhubarb, tomato juice, fruit tinned in syrup
Meat Allowed: Beef, lamb, pork, veal, chicken, fish, tuna, salmon
Substitution: 30g meat = 1 egg

= 45g fish

= 30g cold meat

= 30g cheese

= 180ml milk

= 50g cottage cheese

Eggs Allowed Boiled, poached, scrambled and fried eggs 
Avoid: Nill
Milk Allowed: Milk ? full cream, skimmer and skimmed, cheese, cottage cheese.
Avoid: Too much milk, cheese or yogurt
Fats Allowed: Margarine, salt free margarine, butter, oil, cream
Avoid: Nill
Soups Allowed: Avoid all. 
Spreads Allowed: Jam (low joule)
Avoid: Vegemite, jam, honey
Desserts Allowed: Jelly (low joule), tinned no added sugar fruit, fresh fruit, fruit salad, LK diabetic desserts, cream, diabetic custard, ice cream as specified
Avoid: Fruit on list to avoid, chocolate, ordinary and low protein jelly, fruit tinned in syrup, low protein custard, ordinary custard
Condiments Allowed: Salt, pepper, lemon juice, vinegar, dressing, gravy and tomato and herb sauce within allowance
Avoid: Commercial tomato sauce, tartare sauce
Beverages Allowed: Water, tea, coffee, low joule cordial, fruit juice (no added sugar) and according to fruit allowance, soda water, mineral water, low joule soft drink ? all fluids allowed according to fluid restriction
Avoid: Bonox, stock, Aktavite, ordinary cordial
Desserts Allowed: Jelly (ordinary, low joule, low protein), tinned fruit, fresh fruit, fruit salad, LP/LK desserts, cream, ice cream, low protein custard and ordinary custard
Avoid: Fruit on list to avoid, custard and ice cream more than allowance, chocolate
Condiments Allowed: Salt, pepper, lemon juice, vinegar, dressing, gravy and tomato and herb sauce within allowance
Avoid: Commercial tomato sauce, tartare sauce
Beverages Allowed: Water, tea, coffee, cordial, fruit juice (according to fruit allowance) soda water, mineral water ? all fluids allowed according to fluid restriction
Avoid: Bonox, stock, Aktavite
Miscellaneous Allowed: Sugar, Polycose, boiled lollies, artificial sweeteners
Avoid: Chocolate, nuts, licorice, toffee, cocoa 

 

SAMPLE MEAL PLAN FOR LOW POTASSIUM DIET


Breakfast Tinned fruit

1 Weet bix

100ml milk

1 egg

2 white toast with 2 packets margarine
jam or honey

Morning Tea: 1 coffee biscuit
Lunch: 1 sandwich with 30g meat and lettuce

1 piece of fruit

Afternoon Tea: 1 coffee biscuit
Dinner: 150g meat

1 scoop potato

2 serves vegetables plus extra margarine

Dessert Tinned fruit and cream
